His works became the basis for the librettos of some of the most popular Russian operas, such as Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin", "The Queen of Spades", "Mazeppa"; Rachmaninoff's "Aleko"; Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov"; Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmila"; Rimsky-Korsakov's "Tale of Tsar Saltan", "The Golden Cockerel" and "Mozart and Salieri"; Stravinsky's "Mavra" and many others.
And, of course, his poems were set to music in countless art songs.
