On This Day: 115 years ago Rimsky-Korsakov's opera "The Golden Cockerel" premiered in Moscow
#onthisday , September 24th 1909 (115 years ago) the last of Rimsky-Korsakov's fifteen operas "The Golden Cockerel" was premiered in Moscow.
I. Bilibin. Tsar' Dodon meets Shamakhan Queen
This opera was a sharp satire on the Russian monarchy of that time, and the censors were against its production. Due to that the premiere became possible only a year after the composer's death and with significant cuts.
Still, the critics called "The Golden Cockerel" a new type of opera - "artistic satire", and the audience easily read the political references in it.
